I sat at my desk and folded my arms across my chest. The day was a bust. We learned nothing that we didn’t already know, and that irked me. Something about the news reporters at the station rubbed me the wrong way. Someone knew something. The group was too silent once we started asking them questions about what she was working on. One of them knew and didn’t want to say. I would have thought her murder might loosen their tongues, but I guess not. It was so strange.

Tony told me all he learned from the group was that Patricia was quiet and hardworking and mostly kept to herself, and she couldn’t possibly do anything that would get her killed. If she could be killed over a news story, then the rest of them could be, too.

No one could think of any suspects or of anyone who wanted her dead. They couldn’t even think of anyone that didn’t like her. I glanced down at my phone and saw a text from Harrison. My stomach soured.

Harrison: Hope you are having a great day. Can’t wait to hear your voice.

I sighed. The image of Harrison hugging his patient flashed in my mind. I tried to think of something else, but the image kept popping up. They were so close, so intimate. It pulled at something in me—something screaming that something wasn’t right. I felt it in my bones, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. The way they looked at each other. Some psychiatrists slept with their patients. Was that it?

I felt the frown bloom on my lips the more I thought about it.

“What is that?”

I blinked. The sudden raspiness of Tony’s voice brought me back to reality. I looked at him. He pointed to my computer screen. On the screen was a sticky note. It looked like Hattie’s handwriting.

Call Officer Jessie

It took a moment for me to remember who Jessie was. He was one of the officers we talked to who had been guarding Ailani when she had a stalker. I glanced at Tony.

“I wonder what that’s about.”

I shrugged. “Maybe he thought of something else we should know. Something about the stalker.”

Tony nodded as I picked up the phone. I would take whatever kind of lead I could get at this point. In either case. It didn’t matter what it was.

Jessie picked up on the third ring.

“Officer Jessie, this is Special Agent Mia Storm. I’m supposed to call you back.”

“Right. I thought of something else that might help you. I don’t know what…I don’t know if it will help, but I figured I’d tell you, anyway. Any lead at this point is better than nothing.”

“You’re right about that. Is this about her stalker?”

He sighed. “Well, kind of. It’s something she said in passing. I hadn’t…I guess I had forgotten about it. This was a while ago, but talking about it the other day brought back some memories, and I remembered we were searching her house one night. We did that every time she returned home.
